Day 6 (Meet 4)
Today was
our day of judgement. We had a meeting with Kiran Ma’am who would decided whether
we would get the challenge for
working with WASH United and save the lives of children who are dying because
of diarrhoea.
We reflected on how we had behaved with our
peers through the week, what we did that was right or something that we need to
work on. We realized that many of us could not control our emotions (especially negative ones) and said things that hurt others. It was like a verbal diarrhoea. We realized that we need each and every person on same
page and same team to become a full picture and not be incomplete as everyone
is as important as each piece of jigsaw puzzle. Thus the jigsaw puzzle became
the metaphor for our grade.
We also discussed about the research done on
diarrhea and answered the question – All of
us have, at some point in our life, have experienced but none of us died. Then why
did the children in Africa died because diarrhoea? We found that the main reason for diarrhoea leading to
death was lack of awareness of
sanitation
and hygiene, which further leads to dehydration and malnourishment.
We immediately thought of spreading
awareness as prevention is better than cure. But we also felt that before
telling anyone about washing hands we needed to make it a part of our routine- to
wash our hands before eating, after eating and after any sport we play. It was important
to talk from moral authority. We also
found out that washing hands was not as natural as brushing or changing into a
night suit. Right from early childhood, we were not pushed to wash hands and
neither did we remember our parents wash their hands often after many
activities.
At the end of the meeting each one took one
Lego piece and joined them all to
complete the picture. This made us understand the importance of coming together
as a team and building on each other's ideas.
